Gran Sasso

I grew up in Abruzzo, a region of Italy with a very beautiful and inspiring landscape, that rises from pretty coastal towns, through lakes and gentle hills where wine is grown, to the Apennine glacier and high peaks of Gran Sasso, which lend their names to designs in this collection. Gran Sasso, which means Big Stone, is a majestic and fascinating mountain - the highest in the Italian Apennines, standing at 2,912 m.

The dusky shades of this pair of designs are reminiscent of those of Gran Sasso on a soft, autumnal evening, while the corrugated texture shared by both hat and mittens is evocative of this rugged, and rewarding mountain. These patterns are worked in two alternating Àrd Thìr shades: Firemore and Kintra, the combination of which I particularly like!

I designed a fairly large slouch to express the majesty of Gran Sasso peaks and I embellished the crown with decorative i-cord loops.

The softness and squishiness of Àrd Thìr yarn combined with the shades’ warmth will make your hands happy in cold weather!

My Abruzzo province (L'Aquila) is often the coldest place in Italy and I grew up really appreciating the benefit of warm, woollen garments: I still feel that no technical fabric can rival the incredible properties of wool!
