Gradient Mesh

© Tom Barr

Today’s design is Gradient Mesh: a colourful set of a beanie and a pair of gauntlets, featuring a double-square motif. This pattern probably expresses my way to work at its best: the design is very graphic and the simple shape of these accessories provide perfect canvases for welcoming the dance of colours over the surface of the knitted fabric. I really wanted the different shades to appear to move and shift along the surface of the fabric, and achieved this effect using two different colour combinations. The first has a neutral, grey background over which the geometrical colours moves in a gradient. In the second colour option, background and foreground are reversed, with the grey shade picked out against a wash of colour.

Fenella Pole has modelled Gradient Mesh in a superb way, and I feel that she helped hugely to bring my moving colours to life among the beautiful Scottish landscape!

A little note about how the mesh design came about. Sitting in a boring meeting, discussing something unrelated to my job, I began to doodle, and from that little diversion, first the Gradient Mesh Beanie and then other designs began to emerge. An example, perhaps of how time with a pen and a wandering mind is never really wasted.

I found it particularly joyful to play with these small motifs and colours, exploring how small changes make big differences to patterns.
